Getting to know our mission field:Japan

The flag is more commonly known as Hinomaru. Legend says its origins lie in the days of Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century, when a Buddhist priest offered the sun disc flag to the Emperor of Japan, who was considered a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu. Here’s more:
  1. Some men in Japan shave their heads as a form of apology.
  2. Japan has the second lowest homicide rate in the world, but is also home to the extremely spooky suicide forest, aokigahara.
  3. The literacy rate in Japan is almost 100%.
  4. In the past, the Japanese court system has had a conviction rate as high as 99%!
  5. Younger sumo-wrestlers are traditionally required to clean and bathe the veteran sumo-wrestlers at their wrestling “stables”…including all the hard-to-reach places.
  6. Raw horse meat is a popular entree in Japan. Sliced thinly and eaten raw. It is called basashi
  7. Japanese people have an average life-expectancy that is 4 years longer than Americans. Maybe we should eat more basashi!
  8. A musk melon , similar to a cantaloupe can sell for over 31,473 yen which is equivalent to $300.00. We are so blessed!
  9. Japan consists of over 6,800 islands. Over 70% of Japan consists of mountains. The country also has over 200 volcanoes.
  10. There are some Japanese benefactors who sponsor qualified students to school to finish college. One of those successful beneficiaries is our very own, Sis. Lai Saavedra.

Japan is an interesting place with interesting people. God has a purpose why He is sending our best. Let’s continue to pray for this mission field.
